Numeracy

The National Curriculum divides Mathematics into four areas:
1. Using and Applying Mathematics
2. Number and Algebra
3. Handling Data
4. Shape, Space and Measures

The children will have a carefully structured approach to mathematics teaching and will involve the practice and learning of basic skills and practical investigation and problem solving.

We have a Mathematics Scheme throughout the School and the level your child works will depend on his or her ability and attainment.

Calculators are used for specific purposes, such as data handling and numerical investigations etc. (from year 4 onwards), and are not used to replace the learning and understanding of basic numerical skills.

Haydonleigh has implemented the National Numeracy Strategy and each class will have mathematics teaching every day.

The Department for Education booklet 'Understanding progress in mathematics: a guide for parents' may be helpful if you wish to view the targets for each level. It also includes some ideas on activities you can do with your child to support their development in maths at home and help them make progress.

We appreciate that maths homework can be a daunting prospect for parents. In the years since we were at school, the methods taught have changed - so even if you can remember your childhood workings these are now likely to be tackled differently.

With this in mind, we have put together a number of links to information, worksheets and videos on the numeracy topics taught in KS1 and KS2. If you cannot find the information you are looking for via one of these links, please ask your child's teacher - they will be more than happy to explain the way the topic is taught at Haydonleigh so you can support your child's learning at home. You can use your child's year group page to find out what they are covering each term.
