Addition and subtraction are two of the core operations of mathematics. Of the two topics, subtraction can be more difficult, as it is not merely the opposite of addition. Subtraction can mean a number of different things - taking away, finding the difference or even adding on.
The emphasis through the primary years is to teach mental techniques first, before moving onto informal written recording and finally the more formal written methods when a child is able to use a wide range of mental strategies.

I have written a summary of the progression throughout the year groups for each operation as this type of document appeared on quite a few other websites which had good numeracy info..... I have crossed referenced these to the policies you sent me so hopefully they have all the steps in the correct years. They are in Word, so if you could just double check them for me then I can edit them again if necessary.
